51 Must Know Facts About Anne Frank

GP Editors

51 Must Know Facts about Anne Frank' is an intriguing book that conveys facts about the life of one of the most significant and renowned figures of our time—Anne Frank—a young Jewish teenage diarist; in a lucid and digestible form. Anne Frank has become a universal symbol of the oppressed in a world of violence and tyranny. Her image is the epitome of optimism and the will to live. Millions of young people in search of their own identity regard her as their spokesperson. Her diary, which she wrote during the second world war while hiding in Amsterdam for two years, has been interpreted as an eternal testament of courage and hope, relevant to all, and often, though only secondarily, as a document of the Holocaust. It remains a beloved and deeply admired testament to the indestructible nature of the human spirit. Anne’s humour, unflinching honesty and wisdom—all evident in her Diary, are an essential part of her legacy. In 1940, after Germany invaded the Netherlands, Anne and her family couldn't leave the country, so they decided to hide in a warehouse in an attempt to escape the persecution of Jews by the Nazis. For over two years, Anne wrote in her diary with an awareness that was extremely mature for her age. She detailed her experiences and insights while she and her family were in hiding, living in a constant fear of being arrested. The Diary of Anne Frank is a record of her understanding of the war and showcases her incredible storytelling abilities in such horrific circumstances. In 1944, the Franks were found and sent to concentration camps. Anne died before she turned sixteen, and her father, Otto Frank, was the only family member to survive the Holocaust. After the War, Otto returned to Amsterdam, where he found his daughter's diary and then published it as ‘The Diary of a Young Girl’.

FACT 1

Annelies Marie Frank, a young Jewish teenage girl, born on 12 June 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany, is one of the best-known figures of our time, mainly due to her diary, which was written during the Second World War, between 1942 and 1944 in hiding in Amsterdam.

FACT 2

Annes life was short lived. She was less than sixteen when she passed away, but nevertheless her life was truly significant—full of meaning.

FACT 3

Anne was the second child of Otto Frank and Edith Hollander Frank. Annes sister Margot was three years older to her. The family expected to live in Germany, but that did not happen. They decided to flee from their country and had to go into hiding. They lost everything they owned. All this happened because they were Jewish.

 FACT 4

Franks lived a comfortable and cheerful life in Germany. Their apartment was full of books. They found joy in wearing nice clothes and having good food. Anne had her own little sandbox to play in.

FACT 5

Otto Frank was a tall and thin man, who loved being around people, ever outgoing and high-spirited. Edith Frank was plump, and always stayed reserved and quiet. Otto loved to read bedtime stories to Anne and Margot, both girls adored their father very much, and they nicknamed him Pim. The father took many pictures of his girls and created an album for them.

FACT 6

Anne shared a wonderful bond with her father, as they were much alike. Anne did not get along well with her mother. They would get into fights quite frequently. Anne was sometimes jealous of Margot, because she felt that she was her mothers pet. Anne was very moody and had a temper, whereas Margot was serious and cultured. Both sisters had beautiful smiling faces with big eyes, and silky dark shiny hair.

FACT 7

Anne left her native Germany at the age of four, and then she went into hiding when she was thirteen. Anne is seen as Hitlers most famous victim among the six million Jewish victims of Hitlers racial madness. By the time Hitler was defeated, none of Annes family members survived, except her father. Anne could not survive, but her diary did and shall continue to do so.

FACT 8

Unemployment and poverty was surging severely in Germany, and it was the period in which Adolf Hitler and his party were gaining more and more supporters. Hitler despised the Jews, all of them, and held them responsible for the economic and social crisis the country was facing. He took advantage of the rampant anti-Semitic sentiments in Germany.

FACT 9

How on earth can a person be so evil? Thousands of books have been written about Adolf Hitler since his death, but none of them had really found an answer. Hitlers dream was to make Germany the most powerful empire, where he ruled from 1933 until 1945, during the last days of the Second World War. He decided to kill himself rather than surrender. Hitler convinced German that Jews were the cause of all problems in the country, and to get rid of all of them is the answer.

FACT 10

The hatred of Jews and the poor economic situation made Anne's parents, Otto and Edith Frank, decide to move to Amsterdam. Before long, Anne felt right at home in the Netherlands. She learned the language, made new friends and went to a Dutch school near her home. Her father worked hard to establish his business, but it was not easy. Otto also tried to set up a company in England, but the plan fell through. Things looked up when he started selling herbs and spices in addition to the pectin. Annes mother, Edith Frank stayed at home caring for Anne and Margot.

FACT 11

Anne loved to read—history books and Greek myths, and a popular series of books about a girl named Joop who was high-spirited and adventurous like Anne. She found delight in ice-skating and riding her bike with her friend Hanne. At times Anne and Hanne stood on the balcony of the apartment and poured water on the people in the street. Many photos show Anne and Margot in swimsuits as they went swimming. She liked watching movies and would cut out pictures of celebrities from magazines. She wished to be a Hollywood star herself, but was not sure if she looked pretty enough.
